I went out to dinner with a bunch of people from Harvard last winter and this one guy, a physicist, was talking some nonsense about the rarity of instances of vegetarianism in “middle america.” He said “they kill their own food there.” I thought of all the people I knew in Ohio and from Ohio who were vegetarians and told him how upset I was that I wasn’t going on my famiy’s annual bow-hunting trip since I couldn’t afford to go home for Christmas.
I had the pork shoulder for dinner that night. It cost nearly $100. It wasn’t that good.
I don’t hunt. I take photographs. I’m proud to be from Ohio.
